Demetrius Freeman focusses his photo-journalist’s eye on the world that surrounds him in Brooklyn, capturing scenes of solitude and urbanity. The images in the Brooklyn Blues lightbox exhibition each have a cool blue tone or mood lifted from Freeman’s cityscapes. The scenes span from the aspirational architecture of the Prospect Park boathouse or the expansive landscape of the Brooklyn Bridge where the city meets the river, to contrasting quiet everyday scenes of institutional brick buildings. Freeman manages to reveal both the ideal and the real with a personal eye that makes music out of this series of large-scale photographs. Light, color and silhouette glow in schoolyard puddles and in apartment building windows at dusk. Kids at play are bathed in a blue light, and are unguarded and happily occupied.
Freeman collaborated with MTA Arts & Design to create a series of photographic moments that would captivate commuters while passing through the Atlantic Avenue - Barclays subway station. In speaking of the work, Freeman said, "During my daily journeys around Brooklyn, I look at the people and places I encounter through the lens of a photojournalist. I am constantly seeking to capture untold stories, beautiful scenes and unique moments that I hope show a unique view of Brooklyn.” Freeman is originally from Atlanta, GA, Studied Photojournalism and Political Science at Western Kentucky University and is a Brooklyn resident. He is a freelance photographer for The New York Times.
