Black at the Ballot

South Carolina’s has long been called “the Black primary.” On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a majority of the Democratic presidential candidates gathered on the steps of the State House in Columbia singing the words of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” the Black national anthem. A multigenerational, largely Black crowd listened as the candidates tried to win them over.

“Black at the Ballot” is an exploration of what it means to be a black voter today by representing a variety backgrounds, values, opinions, and hesitations about voting.
