I recently got to work on a very important story for ProPublica regarding the legal tactics owners of rent-stabilized apartments use to foster gentrification, eviction and homelessness. Thanks to a 2003 state law, owners of rent-stabilized apartments can arbitrarily boost rents to a legal maximum that they set themselves.
I spent a few days wondering around the complex looking for images and exploring the environment.
Check out the story here.
