ABOUT
Demetrius Freeman is a Washington, DC–based freelance photojournalist and former staff photographer at The Washington Post, where he documented pivotal stories shaping the nation.
He was part of the Post team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Photojournalism, with a minor in Political Science, from Western Kentucky University. His studies included time abroad in Madrid, Spain, as well as an international master’s program at the Danish School of Media & Journalism in Aarhus, Denmark.
His work has been published in The New York Times, ProPublica, and other leading outlets. He has held internships at The New York Times, the Tampa Bay Times, and The Chautauquan Daily, and previously served as a staff photographer for the New York City Mayor’s Office.
Freeman has participated in a number of leading workshops and professional programs, including The Mountain Workshop, the Missouri Photo Workshop, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, The New York Times Portfolio Review, and The New York Times Safety & Security Workshop. He is also an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop (Class XXVII).
His work is grounded in a commitment to truth, access, and representation. Covering the White House, Capitol Hill, and national politics, he documents power, policy, and the people affected by both—focusing on stories with depth, dignity, and context. Through visual storytelling, he aims to inform, challenge, and connect audiences across divides.
Freeman is a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), and Diversify Photo.
